Market Common Spotlight

History

The Market Common is a vibrant shopping, dining, and residential planned community located in Myrtle Beach, SC. This community offers residents a coastal downtown-vibe with local shops and restaurants, just walking distance from their homes. Before the Market Common was the popular place in Myrtle Beach, it was originally the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. During World War II, the  U.S. Army operated out of the Base from 1942-1947. After the war, the Base was deactivated from 1947-1954 and operated as a municipal airport. In 1954 the airport was donated by the city of Myrtle Beach to the United States Air Force, and the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base was actively utilized until March of 1993, at which time it was permanently shut down.  Recognizing the need to preserve our area’s history, yet also enhance the area, the Myrtle Beach Air Force Redevelopment Agency was created in 1995 with retired Air Force Colonel Buddy Styers leading the initiative. This agency oversaw the development of what is now known as the Market Common. In order to preserve the history of the land, the streets are named after significant figures from the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base and signs are displayed throughout the development explaining the history of the area. Even though very few original buildings still remain, the rich history of the community can be seen and felt by residents and visitors.
