Located within South Carolina’s Lowcountry region, Beaufort is a charming city on Port Royal Island that is well known for its Antebellum-era mansions and landmarks. This town has been named by Southern Living as the South’s best small town, and by National Geographic as one of the nation’s top adventure towns. Beaufort has a selection of historical landmarks and cultural attractions, including the John Mark Verdier House Museum and the annual Beaufort International Film Festival. The town is also one of America’s top fishing towns, and houses ample spots for redfish, trout, and tarpon fishing.
Bluffton is a lovely Lowcountry town, located along the banks of the May River and just minutes from Hilton Head Island. This town has been named by the Huffington Post as the top non-beach summer getaway spot, noting the stunning live oak trees and preserved Antebellum-era homes and buildings. Bluffton’s vibrant downtown district is often compared to Austin, Texas for its charming art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants serving Lowcountry cuisine. A hidden gem located 40 minutes from Charleston, Edisto Island is one of the final remaining unspoiled beach communities in the United States. The island serves as a more relaxed and picturesque beach, as compared to many of the east coast’s more developed and tourist-filled areas. Edisto Island offers major nature-infused attractions, such as Botany Bay Plantation, a 4,600 acre plot of undeveloped beachfront that preserves a number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Edisto Island Serpentarium is another eco-touring attraction that showcases wildlife native to the region. Visitors to Edisto Island can enjoy a multitude of outdoor activities, including golfing, biking, and fishing.
Georgetown is a quaint waterfront community located in South Carolina’s lowcountry region, and is one of the oldest cities in the state. The town is lined with gorgeous live oak trees and is home to a number of preserved historical sites and plantations. Visitors can see the Georgetown Lighthouse standing guard of the beautiful Winyah Bay, operating as one of the only two federally-operated lighthouses in the state. Another notable historic attraction is the Hobcaw Barony research reserve, which is a 16,000 acre plantation. Georgetown’s downtown district is home to excellent Lowcountry dining and lively shopping destinations. The nearby Huntington Beach State Park showcases three miles of unspoiled beachfront, and beautiful views of the maritime forest and salt marsh.
One of the Atlantic Seaboard’s top tourist destinations is Hilton Head Island, a 42-mile barrier island home to 12 miles of beautiful beachfront. This city is populated with charming boardwalks and family-friendly attractions, including miniature golf courses, boutiques, and delicious dining. Hilton Head Island is also regarded as a top international golfing destination, housing 33 world-class championship golf courses. Cultural attractions can also be found throughout the island, such as the Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum, the Coastal Discovery Museum, and the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
